Glow: IMS Global Learning Impact

On Monday and Tuesday of next week I will be speaking with colleagues from the Glow contractor, RM, at the IMS Global Learning Impact 2009 event in Barcelona. Glow has been short-listed for the Global Learning Impact Award for 2009. Based on the scale and ambition of Glow I think that it will give the other projects a good challenge. Win or lose it is a good news story for Scotland and for the Scottish Government that Glow is being considered for.

The Winning Game: Launched within Glow

The Winning Game Had a lovely morning at Perth High School launching The Winning Game within Glow. The main force behind bringing the game to Scotland is Winning Scotland Foundation. The Winning Game is based on The Winning Theory of Yehuda Shinar and has been developed by Dundee based games company TPLD. I think it is going to be a big success in Scottish schools. It also provides an even more compelling case for every learner and teacher in Scotland to join the.

Glow is ‘Out of This World’ – According to The Scotsman

Another good news story for Glow in this morning's 'Scotsman' newspaper. Fiona McLeod notes that the capabilities of Glow 'are proving to be out of this world for teachers who can use it find free resources and materials for school projects as wide ranging as The Vikings to the planets.' Lots of great stuff beginning to happen using Glow - some of which we could never have imagined when developing the idea. We still need to work hard to make sure that every learner and teacher in Scotland has the opportunity to take full advantage of what Glow.

On Innovation

I'm on my way to Inverness to speak to Highlands and Islands Enterprise STEM strategy group about how Glow might be used to support the teaching of science in some of Scotland's most remote areas. To my mind this is exactly the kind of need that Glow was designed to (help to) meet. Glow is not just about making lesson content available online it can also facilitate remote teaching and enable the kind of wrap around personal support that will help our young people to succeed wherever they happen to live. Anyway more of this later. I don't do a lot.

Scottish Learning Festival 2008

Just had a couple of wonderful days in Glasgow at SLF2008. We have evolved the festival into a showcase for Scottish education over the last 9 years and I think we now have a model that works pretty well with continuous improvement built in by design. This year the focus was very much on Curriculum for Excellence and innovative classroom practice. The highlights for me this year included:
  • The Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning, Fiona Hislop, responding to questions from the floor of the conference for over 30 minutes. Welcome to living in a democracy and.

Glow in the News Again

There is an article by Melanie Reid in this morning's Times Online covering George Lucas' testimony to the US Congress. Under the headline 'The Force is with Scotland's School's intranet, says George Lucas' the articles goes on to say: 'In what must rank as one of the most heady compliments ever given to an education system, the film maker announced to members of the US House of Representatives that America should adopt Scotland's pioneering school websites as a way to improve pupil access to technology.' Glow Website Revamped

Our press officer Lee-Ann has just sent me a pdf of a small news article in today's  Herald with the above headline. This is really the Glow section of the LTS website (or what we call the LTS Online Service). It looks pretty good and the new sections 'Glow in Your Area', 'Glow in Action' and 'Learning about Glow' will continue to develop as the programme develops..
