Director of Development (Future Learning) & Visiting professor of learning innovation and technology
Visiting prof associated with the UK Centre of Excellence for Computer Games since 2008.

From November 2016 working part-time as Development Director, within the School of Design and Informatics, to support academic staff around innovations in learning and teaching and extending their professional repertoire.

In the past have supported the chair of the Quality Enhancement Committee to develop a response to the 2012 National Student Survey (NSS) and the Enhancement-Led Institutional Review (ELIR). Also worked with Information Services to explore classroom technologies and technology enhanced learning (TEL). Previously worked on a project to explore computer games for learning and a schools engagement project.

Future Skills College
From July 2016 working for 4J Studios and the DC Thomson charity Northwood Trust developing a new model to explore how best close the gap between education and sustained employment for young people in Dundee and Angus. Have helped to built an extensive partnership that includes: D&A College; Dundee City Council; Angus Council; D&A Chamber of Commerce; D&A DYW;  University of Dundee; Skills Development Scotland; Helm Training and employers. The new pathway for school students launched in May 2017. Following five successfully years it became fully integrated into D&A College.

Company formed in November 2014. This exciting venture into the world of improving how people learn to read and write was a lot of fun but after several years proved to be too difficult to secure the funds required to displace legacy reading systems.

Royal Society of Edinburgh – Young People’s Committee
Was invited to join  the RSE YP committee in 2014 and advise on educational technology and innovations in learning. Served a three year term in this role.

The Memory Box Network
Volunteer/Consultant/Chief Operating Officer

Started working with this start-up technology charity in February 2013.  Developing a social network around reminiscence therapy to improve the quality of life for people affected by dementia. Having had tremendous success working with several thousand people over three years the trustees of the charity decided to end on a high and close the charity at the end of 2016.

Independent evaluator of the Scottish Government funded project to promote digital creativity and computational thinking with primary school teachers in Scotland.

BCS Academy/Scottish Government – PLAN C 
Project Evaluator
Independent evaluator of the  Scottish Government Funded –  Professional Learning and Networking for Computing Project (PLAN C). This role involved working with the project leaders and local hub particiapants to evaluate a new approach to engaging secondary computing teachers with a highly innovative model of research evidence informed professional learning.

Independent Consultant/Senior Vice President Learning
Independent educational consultant to San Francisco  based computer games for learning company KneoWorld from August 2011 until October 2013. Then again in a consultancy capacity from 2015 to 2016 with New York City based KneoMedia.

Learning Unwrapped

Recently started working with a group of friends and former colleagues to design events that are a little quirky. First commission  from Skills Development Scotland for an event in November 2013 around the theme of Education to Employment.

Independent consultant and educational technology subject matter expert (SME)
Worked for VP of Cisco’s Indian subsidiary from September 2009 to July 2011. This led to the development of a new Moodle based learning environment (CLE) which is being deployed to schools in India and China. Was retained by Cisco UK in 2011.

Worked as a consultant for the LTS Advisory Council in 2011 to edit and support the development of a publication on ‘Creativity Across Learning’. This followed on from a piece of work I was involved with in my role as Head of Future Learning and Teaching from 2001 on ‘Creativity in Education’.

Worked for the Assistant Secretary of Scotland’s biggest teacher trade union  from December 2009 to August 2011.  Carried out initial review and then worked with EIS staff to build capacity within the union to improve use of ICT for internal and external communications.
